The Problem

PackageNet, a network of over 4,000 shipping counters at major supermarkets nationwide, needed a system to allow users to track pages from the largest shipping carriers - UPS, FedEx, Airborne and the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) from within PackageNet's web site.

The Solution
|

|
The HTTP protocol was used to retrieve tracking data from the carrier sites at the request of the user, which was then parsed using custom code and inserted into PackageNet web pages without intervention from the user. The user did not see the carrier web sites and data was retrieved in real time, making the site a one-stop shop for tracking all customer packages. The system was successfully demonstrated to top executives of Microsoft, Netscape & AOL. The work was done prior to the development of the XML language and could be much simplified through the use of XML today.
