Case Study - Inventory Integration
| |
The Problem
A Texas based reseller of computer products needed to be able to display product availability from multiple supplier inventories on its web site in order to warn users of possible back orders prior to purchasing. The site had over 80,000 products with more than 1,000 new products added and additional 1,000 obsolete products removed each week. Inventory availability was updated multiple times per day.

The Solution
Data was retrieved from major computer suppliers such as Ingram and TechData using FTP over the Internet. A custom Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 Data Transformation Services (DTS) package was used to schedule the retrievals and import the data into the product database for display to customers. A number of optimizations were created to minimize the impact to the web site and its customers of frequent updates to the products listed, their descriptions and their availability.
